Internet Explorer is set up automatically for viewing CJK websites (if the fonts MS Song, MS Gothic or Gulimche are installed), but with Netscape you have to go through a setup procedure. Go through the following steps:
- Make sure you have the Microsoft Chinese font MS Song installed on your computer (for Japanese, MS Gothic, for Korean Gulimche. These fonts are on the Sunrise 2006 CD-ROM, right lower side of Autorun panel).
- On the Netscape Communicator Edit menu: Preferences | Fonts
- For the Encoding, choose "Simplified Chinese"
- For both Variable Width and Fixed Width fonts set MS Song, optimal size setting depends on your display resolution (you may want to try 16)
- Important: check the first radio button "Use my default fonts, overriding document-specified fonts", then click OK to register these settings.
- Repeat the entire procedure for "Traditional Chinese", also setting MS Song. (To set up web viewing for Japanese and Korean, repeat the above procedure with the fonts MS Gothic and Gulimche.)
Having performed this setup, Netscape is now able to display web pages in Chinese characters. In most cases (when the website has the respective tag) the correct display comes up automatically. If it does not display the Chinese characters correctly, specify under "Character set" on Netscape's View menu either "Traditional Chinese (Big5)" if the web site is Taiwan-based, or "Simplified Chinese (GB)" if the site is PRC-based. Recently, some websites have appeared that are coded in UTF-8, but this is still quite rare. (For viewing Japanese sites, specify MS Gothic, for Korean sites specify Gulimche.)
