Welcome to KEY CJK SERVER, the on-line Java version of KEY.

If you have already setup the runtime environment, go directly to KEY CJK SERVER. Otherwise, keep reading:

At present, only Microsoft Internet Explorer supports the Java Runtime plug-in version 1.2.2_006 which is required to run KEY CJK SERVER. To download MS IE 6.0 now, click:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6sp1/finrel/6_sp1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/ie6setup.exe

We will now guide you through the steps of setting up the Java enviroment for using the KEY Java applet.

BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE TO SHUT DOWN YOUR BROWSER DURING SETUP, WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU FIRST PRINT THIS PAGE, FOR YOUR REFERENCE, BEFORE YOU PROCEED. The setup steps are

  1. Download the JRE (Java Runtime Environment)
  2. Install it
After installing the JRE, the applet will be loaded automatically. When the dialog box appears, click on "Register" and enter your registration information. Please memorize, or write down, your username and password, because you will need them each time you log onto KEY CJK SERVER.

Having registered, log on by entering your username and password, which will bring up the KEY applet for the first time. We will now guide you through downloading and installing SECURITY.EXE. After re-starting your computer, re-connect to www.cjkware.com and go to the CJK SERVER page. The KEY Java applet will load automatically.

You will then be prompted for downloading the Microsoft CJK fonts that are required for working in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. By default, the program automatically downloads the two necessary Chinese fonts (Pinyin with Tones, and Chinese character font). Note that the Chinese font is a Unicode font and therefore works for both Traditional and Simplified Chinese (although the installation notice only mentions "Simplified").

To start the installation, click on KEY CJK SERVER.

Total setup time of the CJK SERVER environment, including all required downloads, will be approximately Additional background information:

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE MICROSOFT CHINESE (JAPANESE, KOREAN) LANGUAGE SUPPORT INSTALLED, OUR PROGRAM WILL AUTO-DETECT THIS, AND WILL NOT ASK YOU TO INSTALL THE FONTS, BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY PRESENT. IN THIS CASE, THE ONLY FONT FILE TO INSTALL WILL BE THE "CHARTER WITH TONES" FONT THAT IS PROPRIETARY TO CJKWARE.COM. The Microsoft Chinese (Japanese, Korean) Language Support is available for free downloading from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Warning: make sure to un-install from your computer any existing so-called "Chinese Internet viewer" or other CJK programs that use fonts in a non-standard way, such as memory-resident TSR's, to avoid potential interferences and conflicts. Such "Internet viewers" are being offered as a lure for free download in many locations on the Internet; while they seem to work superficially, they are "hacks" using non-standard techniques that are not supported by Windows, and they may wreak havoc with your system. For viewing / handling CJK text on your computer, or the Internet, you should only use the standard Microsoft fonts MS Song, MS Gothic and Gulimche, in connection with your browser.
